Finished a rotation? Remember to say thank you!

We all know Thanksgiving is around the corner, so this is the perfect opportunity to talk about how we can give thanks to our preceptors for taking us one step closer to becoming RDs!! Are you nearing the end of your rotation soon? Perhaps, today was your last day. Regardless of where you are in your dietetic internship, there are action steps you can take to finish strong!!

  1. If you are completing your last week: Write a thank-you letter or a card to all of your preceptors. Even if this particular rotation was not your favorite, thanking your preceptors for all of the time they spent to teach you is crucial. Most of these preceptors are not paid extra to take on an intern. This action step will be particularly important if you want to work at that rotation or want to stay connected. A gift is not necessary, but a memorable note or gift can make you stand out amongst other interns.

  2. If you already had your last day: Send a thank-you email to all of your preceptors.

  3. If you want to work at that rotation or with the preceptors: Continue to stay in touch with them either on LinkedIn or through periodic emails.

  4. When you completed your internship and passed the RD exam: Send an email to all of your preceptors sharing the good news! If you want to work there, mention that in your emails to see if there are any opportunities for you.

Your thank you note doesn't need to be a love note or an essay, but you want to remind them how much you treasure the time spent mentoring you! Because without our preceptors we won't be able to become dietitians!
